It’s apparent that he perceives Poland as European NATO’s vanguard state for containing Russia in the new “cordon sanitaire” that’s been formed around it over the past year as a result of Trump 2.0’s Neo-Reagan Doctrine.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki spoke about his country’s foreign policy during his speech on the one-year anniversary of his inauguration. He began by reaffirming his goal of obtaining a permanent US military presence in Poland, particularly through the construction of what his predecessor Andrzej Duda called “Fort Trump”, and asked the ruling liberal coalition to support his efforts. Nawrocki then naturally drew attention to the central role that he envisages Poland playing in NATO.
In his words, “we are building Poland’s strength and responsibility on NATO’s eastern flank. This is only a symbol, but it also required work to ensure that the next summit of the B9 group, the Bucharest Nine, which recently took place in Bucharest, will take place next year in Warsaw. This is to demonstrate that the security of all of Europe is decided in Poland, and that Poland is today the strongest fortress on NATO’s eastern flank, together with Scandinavia to the north and Romania to the south.”
Nawrocki thus confirmed what was assessed here about the creation of a “cordon sanitaire” around Russia over the past year wherein Poland serves to connect the Arctic-Baltic (northern) and Black Sea-South Caucasus-Central Asian (southern) fronts unless German–backed Ukraine replaces its role. Closer cooperation with the first’s de facto Swedish leader and the second’s indisputable Turkish one, which also recognizes the importance of nearby Romania, tightens this new containment noose around Russia.
The final part of Nawrocki’s foreign policy review predictably concerned Ukraine, which he said that it’s in the Poland’s strategic interests to support against Russia, specifying that “our interest is for them to fight as long and as efficiently as possible”. He clarified, however, that “it is also Poland’s strategic interest that Bandera’s flags not fly in Warsaw or in Poland” in an allusion to the dispute sparked by Zelensky recently glorifying the Volhynia Genocide’s OUN-UPA culprits at the state level.
Additionally, Nawrocki hinted that the era of unconditional support for Ukraine is over as discerned by him declaring that “we will help, but always with the words: ‘Poland first, Poles first.’ Not thoughtlessly sending fleet after fleet, all without deeper reflection, without analysis, on phone calls and with smiles… all of this must be analyzed and approached with dignity.” The background concerns the national scandal sparked by the ruling liberal coalition recently giving Ukraine five Patriot interceptor missiles in secret.

This doesn’t mean that another war between them is inevitable, just that the millennium-long Polish-Russian rivalry is once again a major force in regional geopolitics.
