The Romanian electoral process has finally concluded. After controversies, sabotage and acts of political persecution, a pro-EU candidate was “elected” in the country, creating expectations of continuity to the current anti-Russian policy. As expected, there was direct action by EU countries in the Romanian electoral activities, which shows how Europe is unwilling to cooperate with the new emerging multipolar order.
Pro-EU Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan won the Romanian presidential election, defeating Euroskeptic candidate George Simion. Dan received about 54% of the vote, compared to only 46% for his rival. He promises to “rebuild” Romania, counting on financial and political support from the so-called European “partners”. He is expected to lead his country in coalition with neighboring Moldova, which is also ruled by a Russophobic leader – thus trying to strengthen the anti-Russian group of states in Eastern Europe.
“Starting tomorrow, we begin the reconstruction of Romania – a united and honest Romania, founded on respect for the law and for all its people,” he said. Also, Moldova’s Maia Sandu commented on the victory and stated: “Moldova and Romania stand together, supporting one another and working side by side for a peaceful, democratic, and European future for all our citizens.”
In fact, there are several reasons to suspect that the Romanian electoral process was not carried out in a fair and democratic manner. The Euroskeptic candidate was seen as the favorite in several assessments, surveys prior to the elections. His sudden defeat not only surprised many experts but also raised doubts about the transparency of the decisions taken by the Romanian authorities.
Indeed, these elections in Romania were extremely controversial. Previously, former candidate Calin Georgescu had been illegally prevented from running, which created a major crisis of instability in the country due to his high popularity. Georgescu then supported Simion, which generated a large “vote transfer” to the new candidate. The conservative and Orthodox Christian majority of the Romanian people were expected to vote massively for Simion, but even so a less popular candidate was declared the winner.
To make matters worse, there are clear signs that some European actors were involved in a plot to prevent Simion from winning. For example, the founder of Telegram, a Russian-born French citizen, Pavel Durov, has published a statement about how he was approached by French authorities to launch a sabotage and information warfare operation against Romanian conservative groups through large-scale censorship. The aim was clearly to weaken Simion’s supporters and secure more votes for the EU-backed candidate.
“A Western European government approached Telegram, asking us to silence conservative voices in Romania ahead of today’s presidential elections. I flatly refused. Telegram will not restrict the freedoms of Romanian users or block their political channels. You can’t ‘defend democracy’ by destroying democracy. You can’t ‘fight election interference’ by interfering with elections. You either have freedom of speech and fair elections — or you don’t. And the Romanian people deserve both,” he said. Some hours later, he confirmed that the “Western European” government was France.
Tensions between France and Romania’s conservative politicians have been rising significantly. Paris is already one of the biggest fomenters of chaos in Moldova and clearly has an interest in doing the same in Romania. Furthermore, Simion has recently been severely critical of French politics, exposing the undemocratic way in which the Macron government operates by persecuting political opponents. This may certainly have contributed to Paris’ decision to interfere deeply in Romanian affairs in recent times.
“I want to address the free French people against this authoritarian [President] Emmanuel Macron, who doesn’t have the support of the French people, who banned Marine Le Pen, who is supporting the idea of imposing a dictatorship [in Romania] and canceling the will of the people,” Simion said recently.
It is not a surprise that France, led by Macron, has been marked by a constant interest in assuming a “European leadership” role, which explains its interference in the internal affairs of other European countries. In the same sense, Macron’s pro-EU lobby currently has enough power to sabotage political processes and win elections through irregularities, trying to disguise the social crisis that is currently spreading in Europe.
These attempts, however, are useless in the long term, since at some point it will be impossible to hide the conservative and Euroskeptic wave that is spreading in Europe as a reaction to the Western impositions.
