Laura Loomer & MAGA Like Her Are Wrong: “MAGA Dissidents” Aren’t A “Russian Influence Op”

Outgoing Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard released four partially declassified pages pertaining to US-funded Ukrainian biolabs. Readers can watch her announcement here, read the press release here, and access the documents here. There’s nothing new therein, just a reaffirmation that these labs exist and are indeed funded by the US, but her move set off another social media debate between Trump’s MAGA movement and what can be described as so-called “MAGA dissidents”.

The first is led online by Laura Loomer nowadays while the second can be considered jointly led by Candace Owens and Tucker Carlson. Former Director of the National Counterterrorism Center Joe Kent has since joined the ranks of the “MAGA dissidents” following his resignation that reportedly preceded what would have otherwise been his firing. Laura and many MAGA believe that Tulsi, who hired Joe, is also a “MAGA dissident”. Her unexpected biolabs disclosure sealed the deal for many of them.

Ironically, despite MAGA having been accused by the Democrats over the past decade of being a “Russian influence operation” (RIO) and Trump to this day still being seen by them as “Putin’s puppet”, Laura and many other MAGA nowadays conspiracy theorize that the “MAGA dissidents” are RIOs. This was brewing since late 2024’s Tenet Media scandal where that company of putative right-wing influencers was accused by the feds of being financed by Russia. Nobody was convicted, though.

Nevertheless, that scandal in retrospect planted the seeds in some MAGAs’ minds that those broadly on their side (or at least claim to be) who they dislike might be paid by Russia, ergo the foundation of Laura and her followers’ conspiracy theory. She herself explicitly claimed that “The Deep State spent years manufacturing a fake Russia collusion hoax against President Donald Trump to intentionally desensitize the public to actual foreign subversion.” “Duginism”, according to her, is Russia’s modus operandi.

She’s since concocted a convoluted conspiracy theory that most influential figures who can be considered “MAGA dissidents” (even if they were never truly MAGA to begin with according to most MAGA) are somehow or another connected to Russia, including Tulsi and especially Candace and Tucker. The reality is that Russian media is always looking for Russian-friendly foreigners to promote while “MAGA dissidents” are always looking for new audiences. This makes for a marriage of convenience.

Russian media also wants to annoy Trump by promoting his “dissidents” as revenge for him reneging on the “Spirit of Anchorage” whereby he reportedly agreed to coerce Zelensky into withdrawing from Donbass in exchange for Putin ceasing hostilities. The “MAGA dissidents” also want to annoy him, albeit for their own reasons, thus adding another dimension to their “marriage”. This doesn’t make them all RIOs just like the foreign “dissidents” that the US promotes aren’t all its own influence operations either.

While it’s true that each has an interest in promoting the other’s “dissidents”, it’s a slippery slope to paint them all as foreign agents, yet many MAGAs’ personal dislike of Candace, Tucker, and Tulsi has led to them becoming that which they used to hate, namely Democrat-like Russiagaters. None of them, especially not the outgoing Director of National Intelligence, is a Russian agent. Continuing to claim that they are is discrediting and ironically similar in spirit to Candace’s conspiracy theories that MAGA mocks.
