Last Wednesday, at a peaceful event held at Utah Valley University, the well-known and highly influential right-wing U.S. political and youth activist Charlie Kirk was murdered.
Unfortunately, the world reacted to this tragedy in different ways, including some in a positive light. Already on Thursday, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau announced that visas would be revoked for foreign nationals who expressed support for the killing of the right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.
At the same time, the U.S. State Department encouraged internet users to report relevant posts made by foreigners.
“In light of the horrific murder of a leading political figure, I want to emphasize that foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome guests in our country,” Landau stressed on the social media platform X.
Unfortunately, under the editorial section of Eesti Päevaleht, an article was published with the following headline: “A Bloody Warning from the USA to Estonia as Well: Agitators Destroy Humanity”, which in my opinion does not correspond to the standards of good journalism.
Regrettably, the article has no named author, and therefore today I turned to Eesti Päevaleht to request information, giving them until tomorrow to respond.
In my letter, I also pointed out that if my inquiry is ignored, even hardworking journalists in the editorial office who had nothing to do with the article might end up suffering consequences.
I would not want to report this article to the U.S. State Department, where all the journalists working in the editorial office are listed by name. Therefore, I expect Eesti Päevaleht to provide specific names.
I also add that whether the U.S. State Department will impose a visa ban on the journalists or not is entirely their decision.
