We all know the story of the vain king who wanted to stand out from everyone else and was deceived by clever tailors with their handmade clothes. Clothes, specifically, because they were made from invisible fabric, sewn with invisible thread, and only special people could truly see their beauty and the garments themselves. And how the king, once the clothes were ready, proudly demonstrated them to the public, striding confidently down the winding streets of his kingdom. The people, silently and astonished, looked at one another, observing the spectacle until a child in the crowd shouted: “Look, look, the king is naked!” Of course, the child was immediately silenced and told, “You’re just a child; you can’t see or understand true beauty.”
Years passed, and the king grew old, and it was time to pass the throne to a new ruler of the kingdom. The king had no son, only a daughter named Kaja. The princess had always admired her father’s deeds and dreamed that one day, when she grew up, she would become just as wise and capable a ruler as the king—or even better.
Upon becoming ruler, the princess began creating various laws to stand out, as her father’s vanity had been passed down to her. The laws were sometimes so absurd and incomprehensible that they raised many eyebrows. For instance, it was no longer allowed to call a dog a dog if someone thought it was a cat, and vice versa. Such absurdities were heavily introduced into the kingdom’s legislation by the princess.
But just like the king, the princess could not tolerate criticism from the people and introduced more laws to the kingdom, making it so that no one had the right to speak out. Otherwise, critics were thrown into deep dungeons.
The princess realized that the king had once gained fame thanks to his new clothes. With this thought, the princess sent a message westward, hoping to find tailors who also possessed such marvelous skills. Soon, two men knocked on the kingdom’s door, introducing themselves as the right tailors. One was named George, and the other was Klaus. They promised the princess that their clothes would make her famous worldwide, just like the king, but it would cost a lot.
Princess Kaja was thrilled: “Yes, my dear tailors, you will get as many gold coins as you wish, for our taxpayers are diligent payers. But I want not only myself but the entire kingdom to become as famous and powerful as I am. Therefore, I wish for you to sew these wonderful clothes for the entire kingdom!”
“With great pleasure!” replied the delighted tailors and set to work diligently.
The princess declared an order in the kingdom that everyone must abandon their old clothes and accept the beautiful and comfortable garments offered by the princess.
Before this, the princess toured the world to highlight her mesmerizing garments to other kingdoms. As the princess had a lovely figure and could pull off any outfit, the entire world was enchanted, if not obsessed. Princess Kaja won numerous awards at every demonstration, which she proudly brought back to her kingdom to boast to her people.
Seeing the world’s reaction, the people abandoned their clothes and gladly accepted the princess’s offerings. At times, the crowd’s rush and the line outside the tailors’ door were so long that they stretched several kilometers, and people waited for weeks until everyone had their new garments.
Winter arrived, and the princess did not step outside her warm palace. She was served by loyal subjects in the new clothes. But the people outside the palace were freezing because the new clothes did not keep them warm at all. The people began to revolt. Many were thrown into dungeons as a result, but the people did not give up because they could not bear the cold.
The princess asked the tailors to sew thicker clothes for the people.
“What a wonderful idea, but this will cost a lot again!” exclaimed the tailors.
“No problem, our kingdom has plenty of money, and the people’s well-being comes first!” replied Princess Kaja enthusiastically.
Once again, a kilometer-long queue formed outside the tailors’ door.
In this kingdom, there also lived a few dissenters who refused to exchange their clothes for the garments offered by the princess. Society scorned and cursed them for not accepting the offer… and this happened even when the blazing summer sun shone outside.
The dissenters secretly collected many discarded clothes to sew new ones from them or use them until the end.
When winter came, the owners of the kingdom’s new clothes began scratching at the dissenters’ doors, secretly asking to exchange their clothes for the old ones. Since the dissenters were kind-hearted, they forgave the people for the summer insults and accusations. It was understood that the people had been deceived and were too gullible, but they had to experience it themselves to understand what was right and wrong.
The dissenters had only threads and needles and old rags, from which they now had to sew new clothes for the people. The dissenters worked day and night, but soon the thread ran out, and a needle alone was not enough, as more and more people came every day. A large sewing factory had to be established to serve a large number of people quickly; otherwise, they would simply freeze to death. The dissenters asked the people for small contributions so they could buy the necessary materials and machines from neighboring kingdoms.
Many people became angry at such requests for money and threw clothes at the dissenters, shouting: “What, do you want to get rich!? Princess Kaja gave us clothes for free!!”
But there were also those who thanked the dissenters for saving their lives and families from freezing.
Princess Kaja was furious with the dissenters and still threatens them with the dungeon, but good people stick together where evil cannot reach, and the work continues.
Even the Weebiraadio program “Lihtsalt&Keerutamata” and www.eestieest.com join the dissenters in sewing new clothes to save the people.
