The results of a chromosome test for Imane Khelif, who won Olympic gold at the World Boxing Championships in March 2023 , confirm that the Algerian boxer is, as many have suspected, a biological male.
In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) disqualified Khelif for “failing gender suitability tests.”
A leaked medical report, first published by 3 Wire Sports on Sunday, showed that Khelif’s DNA contained “markers with a male karyotype.”
A separate medical report in June 2023 found that Khelif was born with a genital defect known as 5-alpha-reductase type 2 gene, which results in XY chromosomes, internal testicles, and a micropenis.
Hormone test results showed that Khelifi had a “male testosterone level of 14.7.” In women, testosterone levels do not exceed 3.
According to the National Library of Medicine, many people with 5-alpha reductase are “female at birth” but are actually “genetically male.”
Despite this, Khelif was deemed eligible to compete at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, where she “won” the women’s boxing gold medal representing Algeria.
World Boxing announced on Friday that Khelif will have to undergo a sexual health test in order to be eligible to fight against women in the future.
Khelief had previously expressed interest in competing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
World Boxing, which plans to conduct testing for the Los Angeles Olympics, is requiring all individuals over the age of 18 to undergo a PCR test to determine gender. The tests are reportedly conducted using a nasal/oral swab, saliva or blood sample.
In a letter to the Algerian Boxing Federation, World Boxing said Khelif would not be able to “compete in the Eindhoven Boxing Cup or any other World Boxing event in the women’s category” until she had passed a gender test.
“Imane Khelif may not participate in the Eindhoven Boxing Cup (June 5-10, 2025) or any other boxing world event in the women’s category until Imane Khelif has undergone genetic gender testing in accordance with boxing world rules and testing procedures,” the letter said.
“To all the people who claimed Imane Khelif was a woman because her passport said so – you were wrong. We were right. With respect, people with working eyes and a shred of honesty,” wrote women’s sports spokesperson Riley Gaines on X.
Author JK Rowling posted on X that Khelif’s boxing ban is “a victory for women because men won’t beat them to death in the ring.”
“I never said or believed that Khelif was trans. I knew* that he was male. The gender activists who created the political climate where sex testing was seen as ‘fanatic’ are as guilty of the tragedy that followed as the IOC. *via a very reliable source who saw his test results,” Rowling wrote.
Host Piers Morgan also expressed his opinion on Xi: “The biology-denying wake-up brigade cursed and shamed me for saying it was outrageous and dangerous for Khelif to beat women at the Olympics. I’m ready for their apology, but I’m not holding my breath.”
