Indrek Pähnapuu: Estonian media and the political elite form a strange tandem, whose main activity seems to be throwing rural life into chaos.

Opinion

I took a brief look at our “nuclear nation’s” media and the developments in the Republic.
I’ve spent a few days analyzing our “success story,” and it all makes me nauseous… no matter which direction you look.

Estonian media and the political elite form a strange tandem, whose main activity seems to be throwing rural life into chaos. In cities, refined officials and politicians work, for whom rural life seems distant and exotic… It gives the impression that they are completely disconnected from reality.

The media churns out headlines like “Rural life is dying out!” or “Support for rural areas is ending – everyone is moving to Tallinn!” Meanwhile, politicians march with cameras through fields and alongside tractors, making grand promises about supporting rural life. But once the cameras are off, only empty promises and a big bubble of hot air remain.

And the results? There are none… and there won’t be any.

The rural dweller, who is just trying to live their life, gets caught up in the games of media and politics. One moment they hear that all subsidies are disappearing, and the next moment, a new law is coming that will turn farming upside down.

Yet no one reaches real solutions. Instead, they flood the air with more and more information, as confusing and contradictory as an old man’s weather predictions. 😂

The rural dweller feels like they’re constantly in the middle of a growing chaos. They no longer know whom to believe – the government’s endless promises or the media (sewer pipe), which paints a picture of infinite growth and white ships arriving. Thus, the madness continues day after day, where rural people are merely used as background props for political theater and media clickbait games – and that’s it.

Nothing more.
