How common is distrust of the mainstream media?

Opinion

Distrust of the news is especially widespread in the United States and France.

As Statista Anna Fleck describes below, according to a survey by Statista Consumer Insights, one in five respondents in each country said they don’t trust the mainstream media.

This is the highest proportion of the 21 countries surveyed.

Spanish respondents were similarly skeptical, with 19 percent of respondents responding with the same.

As can be seen from the graph, Swiss are more convinced of their country’s journalistic integrity, with only 13 percent of respondents saying they distrusted the Swiss mainstream media.

Less than one in ten respondents said they don’t trust Chinese news.
