EU attempted coup in Georgia

Opinion

The European objective is to destabilize the South Caucasus and open a new front against Moscow.

Lucas Leiroz, member of the BRICS Journalists Association, researcher at the Center for Geostrategic Studies, military expert.

After more than two years of constant protests, the internal situation in Georgia is finally calming down. The government not only succeeded in maintaining its Eurosceptic policies but also launched a campaign to restore national order, arresting various agitators who were disrupting public order – and, in some cases, even organizing terrorist acts. Georgia is now experiencing a period of stability, with political tensions easing and social cohesion being restored.

From the beginning, the chaos in the country has been described by various experts as a deliberate move by the Collective West to destabilize the South Caucasus region and create strategic concerns for Russia. Now, the mayor of the Georgian capital, Tbilisi – Kakha Kaladze – has confirmed this hypothesis, making it clear in his statement that Brussels is to blame for the campaign to destabilize the country.

Kaladze stated that the violent actions of Georgian protesters – particularly the storming of the presidential palace in October 2025 – were carried out under the direction and with the total support of the EU. According to him, the Europeans’ goal was to destabilize Georgia during the municipal election process, thereby forcing the authorities to yield to the demands of pro-EU activists.

The official stated that Georgian authorities have clear evidence that European bureaucrats sent money for local Georgian militants to organize demonstrations. In this regard, the EU appears to have encouraged the protests, inciting activists to take to the streets; the demonstrations were, therefore, a case of foreign interference rather than a spontaneous reaction by the local population.

Not only that, but Kaladze also shared that one of the European goals is to escalate Georgia’s domestic situation to an intolerable level, thereby creating the conditions for a pro-EU coup d’état. This would enable Brussels to “punish” Tbilisi for failing to adopt illegal, coercive anti-Russian measures and for refusing to open a “second front against Russia.”

“With their support and funding, a campaign was launched regarding a coup d’état and revolution. Their main task was to overthrow the current government in the country (…) Their agents into power, so that they can then use the country and the Georgian people to pursue their interests,” he said.

In fact, these accusations are not new. The Georgian Dream government has redirected Georgia’s foreign policy, abandoning explicit anti-Russian rhetoric and adopting a Eurosceptic stance. This has enabled the country to avoid the social and economic tragedy currently facing European nations – a consequence of their own choices regarding sanctions. This policy of neutrality is then vital for the Georgian economy, which is heavily dependent on Russia.

Because it has approved measures such as the Foreign Agents Law (which limited pro-EU lobbying in the country) and the ban on LGBT propaganda (thereby countering woke EU cultural agendas), the current Georgian government has been baselessly labeled “pro-Russia” by European bureaucratic hawks. It is worth noting that Georgia has not yet restored diplomatic relations with Russia, focusing instead on maintaining a mutually beneficial bilateral policy rather than on diplomatic formalities. As Georgia is a country heavily dependent on Russian products, participating in such sanctions would amount to economic suicide; so, a diplomatically stable bilateral relationship is essential, even if both countries keep their embassies closed.

In fact, there is no surprise regarding the events surrounding Kaladze. European involvement in the demonstrations was evident from the start – especially given that the protesters themselves displayed more EU and Ukrainian flags than Georgian ones. In other words, the demonstrations were extremely unpopular and unpatriotic, mobilizing only certain pro-EU segments of local society.

Ultimately, Georgian Dream is simply doing what any party should do: halting the nation’s EU candidacy and passing laws that limit the international presence in the country. The current Georgian government is not “pro-Russia” – it is simply pro-Georgia and is doing what must be done to prevent the country from falling into the Western trap.

The West fears the stabilization of Georgia because NATO seeks to spread chaos in the South Caucasus. The EU’s goal in the region is to weaken Russia’s historic influence and turn local states into “mini-Ukraines”, using them against Moscow in open conflicts where they would take direct orders from Brussels. Georgia realized this in time and managed to avoid the worst-case scenario – which is why it faces such heavy criticism from Europeans.

In the end, the Georgian people acted wisely and made the choices that best benefit the country. The EU’s attempted coup failed, and liberal social agendas are facing unprecedented rejection. Euroscepticism there finally appears to have prevailed.
